Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez tells Alberto Aquilani to be patient

Rafael Benítez has sought to reassure Alberto Aquilani over his long-term Liverpool future despite admitting that he cannot afford to risk the club’s pursuit of the final Champions League slot by granting the Italian the playing time he needs to adapt to the Premier League.

Aquilani, a £17 million summer signing from Roma, has made just seven starts since recovering from the ankle injury which ruled him out for much of last year, and has completed a full game just once in seven months at Anfield.

That failure to secure a regular role has led to speculation Aquilani’s stay in the Premier League may be brief, with Juventus reported to be considering offering the Italian international passage home this summer.

Benítez, though, met with the player last week to explain that, with Liverpool’s season in the balance, his only choice is to play the strongest side available.

“It is not easy for a player when you have been injured for a while,” said Benítez. “Then when you are available and the team is not doing well, it is even more difficult. You have to decide if you can afford to give him two or three games when you know he is not at the level he could be, so you could end up losing some of them.
